Hello!

Postby Bub » 06/01/09 18:13

First in English then in badly translated Dutch!

Hello,

I'm posting on behalf of a team from the UK who have heard about the FOM LAN taking place February 20th -> 22nd. From the photos and posts it looks like a great LAN but I have some questions if you could answer them it would be much appreciated.

1) What do people do for accomodation/sleeping arrangements. Is there a campsite? An indoor sleeping area? Suggested hotels/B&Bs or anywhere that we could book 2 nights sleep in?

2) What is food & drink like on-site. Is there food areas? Can we bring some of our own Yorkshire Tea? Is there a bar? Is alcohol allowed? Are there supermarkets close?

3) Can we rent PC's for the event, how much does that cost and what spec are the computers? Are there any restrictions of use?

4) If we bring our own do we need anything other than the relevant EU power leads?

5) Would the language gap be a problem?

6) Is there free parking available? (We would be driving from UK -> event)

7) Should we come from the UK to your marvelous LAN? :)

Thanks in advance

here comes the badly translated Dutch version!!!
Hallo,

Is alcohol toegestaan?

Well most people just bring their sleeping-bags, and pick a spot at the event.
If you're looking for some hotels, check out this news post: http://www.fom.be/index.php?mode=news#587

Bub wrote:2) What is food & drink like on-site. Is there food areas? Can we bring some of our own Yorkshire Tea? Is there a bar? Is alcohol allowed? Are there supermarkets close?

Yes we have a bar, yes we serve alcohol and yes you're allowed to bring your own drinks.
You can also buy french fries, hamburgers, sandwiches, ... In the neighborhood there are also some places where you can find something to eat.

Bub wrote:3) Can we rent PC's for the event, how much does that cost and what spec are the computers? Are there any restrictions of use?

Afraid not :)

Bub wrote:5) Would the language gap be a problem?

Well, we've had some foreign clans in the past and, as far as we know, they survived :)
Most Dutch people speak English (or try to)

Bub wrote:6) Is there free parking available? (We would be driving from UK -> event)

There will be parking space available

Bub wrote:7) Should we come from the UK to your marvelous LAN? :)

No doubt :)

if you would realy like to take a swim, there is a indoor pool in "aalst", a bigger city about 5km from Wieze.

on the other side, i can't imagine why you would take a swim, most likley, its going to be cold, wet and a period with lots of rain :(

For your tea I think you should ask the kitchen for hot water. FoM doesn't allow things like water boilers on their powergrid. If you really want to bring your own boiler, I think you should ask the crew where you can plug it in.
AFAIK there are no supermarkets really nearby. But if you're by car that shouldn't be a real problem. Though IMHO the food at the bar is not too expensive, and they're open 24/24 :D
4) If we bring our own do we need anything other than the relevant EU power leads?

EU plugs would be a good idea yes :) Don't forget that there is a difference between EU and Dutch/German plugs: the plug needs to have a "hole" for the earth.
Also, don't forget a network cable. 15m will be a good length. A shorter one might work in most cases, but if you're at the end of a row you might need it.
5) Would the language gap be a problem?

Most Belgians speak English rather good, so that shouldn't be a problem.

About the power there, we use 220-230V there, so be sure everything works on that.
And as for the last question, it would be an honour :)

They're living in the UK, not the VS.

For PC-rental please check out: http://www.tek-9.org/news/Gamevibes_run ... -1348.html

Strange thing is, the FoM crew is denieing the possibility of PC-rental but the article at Tek-9 tells another story:

With interest from international participants being high, we decided to arrange for a possibility to rent PC’s at a cheap price for the weekend. The price is 65 € per person for a new shuttle PC (3 months old) with great specifications and possibly a multitude of games already installed. These PC’s will be available on your spot with no setup required anymore at day one and you can simply leave your pc when you go home.

More info soon(TM)
